Learning should feel like play.

Chirp exists to make learning a language something you look forward to — not a chore you feel guilty about skipping (though Pip will remind you either way).

Why we built Chirp

Most people who start learning a language quit within a month. Not because they can't learn — but because life gets busy and there's nothing pulling them back. Textbooks don't text you. Classes meet once a week. Motivation, it turns out, is a design problem.

So we designed for it. Every part of Chirp is built to earn five minutes of your day and turn those five minutes into a habit: short lessons that fit between things, a streak you'll fight to protect, weekly leagues that make progress social, and a mascot with the emotional range of a golden retriever who really wants you to conjugate some verbs.

We'd rather you do one lesson a day for a year than ten lessons in one weekend and never come back.

How we think about learning

Chirp teaches by doing. Instead of memorizing vocabulary lists, you build real sentences from the first minute — arranging word tiles, hearing them spoken, and getting instant, friendly feedback. Mistakes aren't punished; they're shown the right answer and moved past. The goal is momentum, because momentum is what keeps you learning tomorrow.

We also believe in being honest about what an app can and can't do. Chirp won't make you fluent overnight, and we don't pretend our habit mechanics are backed by a decade of data we don't have yet. What we can promise is a genuinely good daily practice, and a product that gets better as we learn what actually helps our learners.

Meet Pip

Pip is our green owl, our mascot, and — let's be honest — our conscience. Pip celebrates your wins with confetti, gets a little dramatic when your streak is at risk, and knows when to back off. One character, one personality, across every screen. If you've ever felt personally attacked by a friendly reminder, you've met the spirit of Pip.

A note on this build

Chirp is a cshell reference venture — a faithfully-built clone of the consumer-app archetype, made to show what a fully-built company of this kind looks like end to end. It teaches one course (Spanish), with one exercise format and one league structure, all real and working. It is not affiliated with Duolingo.
